What is étage 19?

Étage 19 is an independent exhibition space in Nidau, run by a non-profit association. The space gives visibility to contemporary art — beyond the commercial gallery scene, and embedded within the art scene of the Biel/Bienne and Seeland region.

Each exhibition brings together four artists who bring the space to life for four days: an opening on Thursday, the exhibition open to the public on Friday and Saturday, and a closing event on Sunday — concluding with a musical or performance piece.

The format is deliberately compact and intensive: short runs, personal encounters, and direct interaction between artists and visitors.

What the association makes possible

Space

The membership fee covers the running costs of the exhibition space — rent, infrastructure and basic equipment. Without the association, there would be no space.

Visibility

Invitation cards, the website, social media and opening event communications are funded and organised by the association.

Programme

Closing-night events, performances and concerts are made possible through the support of the association and its members.

Independence

Étage 19 is commercially independent. Artists are invited according to the association’s own curatorial criteria — not according to market logic.

Become a member

Anyone wishing to support the étage 19 association can become a member. Members receive invitations to all vernissages and finissages, are kept informed about the annual programme and play an active part in ensuring that this space can continue to exist.
